Her father Shubeer Sen is a former Indian Air Force Wing Commander and her mother, Sen. Subhra a fashion artist and jewelry designer.
She attended school at Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute. She received critical acclaim and box office success for the film Aankhen.
Her biggest hit was in 2004 movie Main Hoon Na, where she played Shahrukh Khan girlfriend.
It has been reported that Sushmita will portray the slain Pakistan People's Party leader Benazir Bhutto in a film co-produced by Zaid Aziz and Henna Rai in Karachi production company Vox Vision and Leicester-based Total Films.
